Lubrication and Other Products
Lubrications within industrial applications are designed to prevent friction between two or more moving parts, even in the harshest of environments and under the most stressful conditions. Industrial lubricants need to have a high viscosity, high boiling point, low freezing point, thermal stability, high resistance to oxidation, and the ability to prevent corrosion.
Lubricants can be in liquid form and non-liquid form. Liquid lubricants include oil, and non-liquid lubricants include grease and dry lubricants. Dry lubricants are suitable for use in extremely high temperature applications, much higher in temperature than other lubricant types.
The majority of lubricants contain a percentage of additives. Some common additives include silicones, fluorocarbons, and esters. Additives are designed to reduce friction, reduce wear, increase viscosity, improve resistance to corrosion and oxidation, and reduce contamination and ageing.
Lubricants are not only used to keep parts moving and reduce friction, but they are also beneficial for transferring heat, removing contaminants and debris, transmitting power, offering protection against wear, and reducing the risk of fire or smoke damage. There are several types of lubricants. These include the following.
Bio Lubricants
Bio lubricants are generally made from renewable sources, such as vegetable oils. Some examples of bio lubricants include lanolin, canola oil, castor oil, and even water. Lanolin naturally repels water, and is a common alternative for petrochemical based lubricants. It protects against rust and corrosion. Water can be used as a lubricant on its own or as a lubricating component, and is commonly used in various engineering processes.
Solid Lubricants
Solid lubricants are generally grouped into three different categories; metal/alloy based solids, inorganic solids, and PTFE (polytetrafluoroethelene). Metal alloys can be can be used as grease additives or used on their own. Cadmium, gold, lead, zinc, and bronze are common metals used. Inorganic solid lubricants can withstand very high temperatures. Graphite and tungsten disulfide are two examples of solid lubricants. Teflon is a type of PTFE and can be added to lubricants. However, PTFE lubricants are not suitable for use in high temperature applications. It does offer chemical inertness, so is suitable in a variety of applications.
Base Oils
Base oils are grouped into several different groups based on their additives. Some have high amounts of saturates added, some have lower amounts of saturates. They also differ in their viscosity index. They can also be grouped into the following categories; paraffinic, naphthenic, and aromatic.
Synthetic Oils
Synthetic oils can include synthetic esters. Synthetic esters are chemical compounds. Synthetic oils can also include phosphate esters, silicate esters, Polyalpha-Olefin, naphtalenes, and ionic fluids.
