Bearings
Bearings
A bearing is a machine element that allows one part of the machine to “bear” transfer or support load and/or rotation from another part. Bearings allow constrained relative motion between two or more parts, most commonly linear or rotational movement. Bearings are often classified either by the directions of applied loads they can handle, by the motions they allow, or by their principle of operation. A bearing can be as basic as bearing surfaces to form a specialized part, while other bearings can be highly specialized, individual units that are inserted into a machine. CBC is able to supply bearings for the most basic of applications, right through to the most sophisticated bearings, of the highest technology and most accurately precise design, for use in the most demanding of applications.
There are at least six common principles of bearing operation:
· Rolling Element bearings, including ball bearings, roller bearings, and needle bearings, they are the most common type of bearing
· Plain bearings, these include bushings and sleeve bearings
· Fluid bearings, involve the load being supported by a liquid or gas, these include foil bearings and journal bearings
· Magnetic bearings, where the load is supported by a magnetic field, these are able to support the highest speeds of any bearing type
· Jewel bearings, most commonly used in mechanical watches, these include sapphire bearings and ruby bearings
· Flexure bearings, involve supporting a load by using an element that is flexible and can bend, a basic example is a door hinge
Different types of bearings are designed to allow and promote different motions. The four types of motion include:
· Spherical rotation, such as ball and socket movement
· Axial rotation, such as shaft rotation
· Linear movement, such as a drawer
· Hinge movement, such as a door
Bearings vary greatly in their shape, their size, their principle of operation, their materials used, and their lubrication requirements. Different types of bearings are designed specifically for different types of applications. An appropriately used bearing can improve accuracy, efficiency, reliability, operational speed abilities, service requirements, and cost efficiency. CBC technical specialists work constantly with a wide range of industry applications to provide customers with the most appropriate, high quality bearings for any application.
The aim of a bearing is to promote particular types of motion, reduce friction, allow or control various speeds, bear varying load levels, and offer a long service life. In order to ensure ultimate efficiency, reliability, and cost effectiveness, and reduce the risk of premature failure, bearings need to be periodically maintained. CBC’s qualified and highly experienced technical specialists are able to offer top quality service and maintenance for any type of bearing unit. CBC specialize in working within a number of industries, including mining, automotive, farming and agriculture, food and beverage, both light and heavy industry, specialist industry, marine, and trucking.
